NH3 Operator II (NH3CO)

RETA OPERATOR II TRAINING FOR CIRO (Certified Industrial Refrigeration Operator)

Requisition: 2 Years of Experience for the CIRO Exam


This training is intended for Ammonia Refrigeration Operators, Managers, and Plant Engineers who have successfully passed the Operator I course and/or have a higher level or experience and knowledge in Industrial Ammonia Refrigeration systems.

Training Materials

  • This training is based on RETA Industrial Refrigeration II Training Manual (IR-ll) and builds on the information in IR I. The student is introduced to insulation systems, the Mollier Diagram, psychrometrics, liquid feed methods, compressor types, complex refrigeration systems, and defrost methods.

Students will receive a Hard Copy Workbook, along with the RETA IR-II Manual for reference material.

Operator II –Training will include:

  • PSM for Operators

o Mechanical Integrity

o Management of Change and Pre-Startup Safety Review (Per Facility Procedure)- Changing setpoints. Changing a new compressor, Changes Daily rounds sheet, SOPS parameters

  • Operator Training


o Incident Investigations

o LOTO/Line Break/Confined Space/Hot work

  • SDS
  • Heat Flow in Refrigeration Systems
  • Psycrometric Chart
  • Low side Valves and Controls

o Valve Control Systems, how to operate them. Regulators, gas stop check valves

  • DX Systems (1 1/2 hour)
  • Liquid Overfeed of Systems (2)

o Differential pressure

o Top fed, bottom fed, pipe sizing.

o Oil removal

o Can pumps

o Pumper Drums

  • Gravity Flooded Systems (1 hour)
  • Secondary Coolant Systems (1 hour)

o Glycol

o CO2

o Plate and Frames

o Utectic Points

  • Low Temperature Systems (Two Stage Systems)

o Booster compressors

o Physical characteristics of low temperature systems

o Efficiency - Horsepower Savings

o Intercoolers

o Booster gas desuperheater

o 2 Stage Non-Condensibles

o Direct Expansion

o CO2 / NH3 Systems Cascade System

o CO2 Pump Recirculation

o Vacuum cooling

o Evaporator Defrost

  • Basic Electricity I
  • Basic Electricity II – Ladder Diagrams

The student is introduced to insulation systems, the Mollier Diagram, psychrometrics, liquid feed methods, compressor types, complex refrigeration systems, and defrost methods.

NOTE: This training is designed to teach the technical aspects of refrigeration for advanced Refrigeration Operators.

This training is LIVE at the NH3 Training Center of Texas, LLC (Montgomery Texas) with a field trip to a

local Ammonia Refrigeration facility for the Hands-On-Demonstration.

Classroom is limited to minimum 10 students and a maximum of 20. NH3 Training Center of Texas, LLC may cancel this session if the participation goal isn’t met.

Paid Registration must be 6 weeks in advance to hold your seat.

NH3 Training Center provides qualified and experienced trainers in Industrial Refrigeration Processes. Our Refrigeration Trainers bring over 30 years of combined years of refrigeration experience, that includes maintenance, starting up new refrigeration systems, revamping an existing system, and day to day operations.

Classroom Locations, Dates and Cost

This is a 5 day (40- hour) comprehensive training course to ensure you know and understand the content of this training.

The key to the success of this training program is to ensure you will have the necessary knowledge and skill set to perform your job with integrity and quality. Therefore, you will be given Tests throughout the training, to ensure you have learned the materials.

NH3 Training Center of Texas, LLC shall ascertain that each Student has received and understood the training. NH3 Training Center of Texas, LLC will prepare a record which contains the identity of the student, the date of training, and the means used to verify that the student understood the training.

COST: $1750. Each student

Includes lunch each day, Test and Training Certification upon completion.

Minimum of 10 students in the classroom maximum 20 students.
