Sites Specific Initial & 3-Year Refresher Ammonia Refrigeration Training

Prerequisite: 1-Year of experience as a Refrigeration Apprentice or

Initial Introduction to Ammonia Refrigeration training.

This training is Classroom and Hands-On-Demonstration training intended for Refrigeration

Operators and Plant Engineers that are responsible for the Day-To-Day Operations of the

Ammonia Refrigeration System and Experienced Operators that need a 3-Year Refresher Training.

This training will focus on the Ammonia Refrigeration System at the plants location and include reviewing the Standard Operating Procedures and Practices for the system.

Training Materials

  • Students will receive a Hard Copy Workbook

Training will include:

  • Overview of PSM and RMP Program Elements
  • Ammonia Awareness Training / HAZ COM
  • Daily/Weekly Rounds SOP including normal operating ranges and actions if outside those ranges.
  • Ammonia Handheld Detector Meter Use (Demonstration)
  • Minor Ammonia Leak (Facility SOP Review)
  • Review of facilities Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (Facility Specific)
  • Safe Work Practices (Hot Work, Confined Space, Line Break, LOTO)
  • Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) Based on Specific Job Task
  • Respiratory Protection and proper usage
  • Oil Draining Procedure/Locations of Oil Draining (Facility SOP Review)
  • Emergency Action Plan and Response
  • Emergency Shutdown of System if needed.
  • SOP Overview (Location, Content and Guidance on reading SOPS) One SOP for each major Component will be reviewed. This training is not intended for participants to learn how to operate the system.
  • Charging the System with Ammonia (Facility SOP Review)
  • Maintenance Procedures (The difference between SMP’S and SOPS) and the requirements for both.
  • Refrigeration Fundamentals
  • Refrigeration Cycles
  • Properties of Refrigerants
  • Refrigerant Tables
  • Types of Refrigerant Compressors
  • Operation and Maintenance of Compressors
  • Lubrication
  • Evaporators and Cooling Units

  • Safety, Hazards, and Prevention
  • For 3-Year Refresher Training (all the above plus)
    Review of All SOPS
    Testing Safety Cutouts and High-Level Floats
    Testing E-Stops and Ventilation System
    Charging the System with Ammonia (Facility SOP Review)

LIVE-ON-SITE WORKSHOP 3-Day Training


This training is LIVE and can be delivered:

At your facility location, at a Local Area Venue, or at

the NH3 Training Center of Texas, LLC (Montgomery Texas)

Scheduled Courses


Classroom is limited to 10 students. NH3 Training Center of Texas, LLC may cancel this session if the participation goal isn’t met.

Paid Registration must be 6 weeks in advance to allow time for travel arrangements and materials to be compiled.


Topics for this training is subject to change based on the need and experience of the students in the training room. This course is not intended for participants to have the required skills and knowledge to operate the refrigeration system. For further training, see our RETA I and RETA II training courses.


Trainer Experience RETA CARO, and CIRO

NH3 Training Center provides qualified and experienced trainers in Industrial Refrigeration Processes. One of our Trainers are RETA CARO, CIRO trained with previous Refrigeration Training experience. Our Refrigeration Trainers bring over 30 years of combined years of refrigeration experience, that includes maintenance, starting up new refrigeration systems, revamping an existing system, and day to day operations.


Classroom Locations, Dates and Cost

This is a 3 day (8- hour) comprehensive training course to ensure you know and understand the content of this training.

The key to the success of this training program is to ensure you will have the necessary knowledge and skill set to perform your job with integrity and quality. Therefore, you will be given Test throughout the training, to ensure you have learned the materials.

NH3 shall ascertain that each Student has received and understood the training. NH3 will prepare a record which contains the identity of the student, the date of training, and the means used to verify that the student understood the training.


COST: $1250. Each student

Includes breakfast and lunch each day, Test and Training Certification upon completion.

Minimum of 10 students in the classroom.
